How Much Are Garage Door Springs?

Types of Garage Door Springs
You’ll find your door’s spring(s) either above the header or overhead along the door tracks.
Two of the most common types of garage door springs are torsion springs and extension springs. Your garage door system will have one or the other (unlike the diagram above).
Torsion Springs
Torsion springs↗ are installed on a torsion shaft above the garage door opening. The number of springs on each garage door varies between one and four depending on the weight and size of the door.
The force exerted by the torsion spring(s) is distributed across the shaft and to the cable drums. The drum spins and winds the cable as the door opens, it’s the energy in the springs that makes all of this possible.
Extension Springs
Extension springs↗ should always be bought in pairs. The number of springs on each garage door depends on the strength of the spring as well as the weight and size of the door.
These springs extend and stretch to lower the garage door. As the door closes, weight is relieved from the tracks and moves as tension into the springs. Each spring on this system works independently as they are on opposite ends. Springs on each side of the door must provide equal amounts of support to the door system.

If you are confident in your home repair skills and will be attempting to replace springs on your own, remember to purchase winding bars for torsion systems. Homeowners often misplace winding bars not knowing what they are for but they are needed for tensioning torsion springs.

The price of extension springs will vary based on a number of factors including:

- Length
- Width
- Strength
Extension spring systems use at least two springs. If only one spring is broken, REPLACE BOTH SPRINGS as it’s only a matter of time before the other breaks as well.

Extension springs are typically less expensive than torsion springs making them an appealing choice. Unfortunately, extension springs also have many moving parts that make replacement challenging and sometimes repairs require replacing additional parts.
