Can I Open My Garage Door If the Spring Broke?
Attempting to open a garage door with a broken spring can be dangerous. Garage door springs act as counterbalances to the weight of the door, providing support to the garage door opener when lifting and lowering it. The garage door opener is not meant to lift the door, the opener moves the door while the springs carry the weight.
Garage doors with at least one broken spring should not be opened or closed using an automatic operator. Opening the automatic operator can cause damage to other parts of the opener system such as:
- Broken or burnt-out gears
- Broken chains or belts
- Bends in the opener rail
Lifting the door manually is not recommended but it is possible. If you decide to open the door manually use extreme caution as some door panels can be very heavy. When possible have another person assist in lifting the door. We don’t recommend attempting the open the door alone unless it is absolutely necessary, instead call a garage door repair company as soon as possible.
